Classic Game Room HD – SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: STRANGE JOURNEY Nintendo DS review
Classic Game Room HD reviews SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: STRANGE JOURNEY for Nintendo DS from Atlus. With more than 300 demons to battle or recruit and a wild storyline taking place in Antarctica, Strange Journey is just that… a strange journey into an anomole spreading to destroy the Earth. Although this Shin Megami Tensei game seems to be the most grounded out of the several I’ve played lately. Fans of good old school adventure RPG games like Phantasy Star and The Dark Spire will dig this one. It packs that unique Shin Megami Tensei demon collecting and fusing style into a classic 1st person RPG video game that works well with the Nintendo DS. This CGR review of Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey has gameplay from the Nintendo DS release of Strange Journey showing video game play in HD action. You wear a cool suit in this game called the Demonica suit which gets more powerful as you gain experience. Players can upgrade the suit and buy new weapons, items, sub-apps and armor with Forma and items found within the anomole. Classic RPG adventure gameplay with that catchy Shin Megami Tensei style make this a must play for role playing game fans with a Nintendo DS. Video game comes packed in some of the best looking packaging that we’ve seen in years along with a soundtrack CD containing the unique music from the game.

should i get Devil Survivor or Strange Journey? Please help
Great review, but…
As I remember, there’s only 4 main series SMT games, and this is one of them (or, at least, it should be, but I’m not sure if it counts 100% being on a portable system). The SMT series STARTED as dungeon crawlers.
Everything else is a spin-off of some kind.
Sorry, you’ve probably heard this hundreds times before in the comments, but the first two or three minutes left me with a bad taste of misinformation in my mouth. D:
@JackFrost3 That depends on how you mean it. It does share Persona 1′s first person dungeons, but those had actually been used since the very first Megami Tensei games on the NES which were never released in the US. Nocturne (aka SMT 3) is actually the “odd man out” for using third person navigation in dungeons. Strange Journey is just “going back to its roots”, so to speak.
I got this game because of this review. It’s fun but tough >.< It’s so annoying when the main character, whom on my game is named Notaherm Hatem(y)job (the Notaherm part is a joke about Serph and Sera merging and becoming a hermaphrodite in Digital Devil Saga 2) gets hit by an unlucky critical or Mudo spell… and game over cutscene makes me feel terrible :<
@devaloki Heehoo!
@skuckon LOL I was exclaiming that at the InceomCompany, because he kept referring to the other game as Demon Summoner, and it’s Devil Summoner. YerE I agree, Strange Journey is apparently flagship because Kaneko said it was, he just didn’t want a number in the title because it would be unappealing to Western audiences. Also yerE it KIND OF is a spin-off, the interesting thing you are allocated a “guardian” when you die in-game in if… it’s kind of like where Persona came from.
@popimpi Ah, truefacts. It’s sort of a prequel to SMT I thought? Not that it doesn’t still count.
And now, I’m not actually sure Strange Journey is in the same chain: YHVH/the Great Will has no role at all. Beelzebub doesn’t appear in any way shape or form. Lucifer never appears as anything but his human form. The only thing saying “Yes” is the gameplay (talking to, recruiting, summoning).
Also, sorry, no, it’s not Devil Summoner. Why did you exclaim that…?
ITS DEVIL SUMMONER, PLEASE SAY DEVIL SUMMONER!
@skuckon You forget about If… it is an SMT game.
The game looks good . But some of the demons in the game could be classified as mature, or at least T rated due to exposure. But other than that it looks fine.
7:38 A random fart?
Best game ever.
@KurandoJutendouji
In fact, Jack Frost is the mascot of Atlus itself, not just the companies SMT series. His likeness appears in a number of their games and logos.
Hee-ho!
@Se7enBeatleofDoom try infiniti space for ds that is awesome
For all those wondering/arguing: there are techinally only FOUR SMT games. The rest are spinoffs/side series. The first 2 smt games never reached the US, and the third was Nocturne…okay, Nocturne Maniax is the one that hit the US, so does that count as 2? (and japan also got a chronicle version, so 3?). Strange Journey is 4.
If you go to Japan, you’ll discover those 4 are the only ones called Shin Megami Tensei: [game name], and the others are just [game name].
I want to see more Mature games like this for the DS!
you move around like persona 1 but the setup for your demon allies is like nocturne with devil survivor battle system
this game is insanely addictive as all hell
so this game is like the first persona right?
@dagogogamer
Jack appeared in the first SMT game and he is the mascot of the series. For your informationnd, Persona is just a spin-off of the main series. So they were not using things from Persona.
jack frost? huh guess they use things from persona in this game, i wonder if jack frost is a demon just like hes a persona in persona
well interesting, I hated the concept of the battle system but the demon merging stuff is pretty interesting.
You don’t have to call it Strange Journey because it is actually Shin Megami Tense 4.
I really like how Atlus went back to the original engine that the old SNES games ran on.
By the way, have you ever played any of the games in the Etrian Odyssey series? It’s another great dungeon crawler type RPG also put out by Atlus that is in many ways very similar to old PC RPG games.
@edskin426 Square hasn’t made a good rpg in ages. Enix however…
@uzuki8106
Not in Japan. It only hit massively here because the series didn’t have such a strong following in the West (only 3 games out of 6 made it).
The only ‘new’ thing 7 really had was the 3D graphics. The battle system was pretty much the same, minus Limits. No revolutionary formula.
Don’t get me wrong, I love 7. But it really isn’t as revolutionary as fans like to believe.
i have it it is cool
@Zeetana1 Nintendo said the might make a Luigi’s Mansion for the 3DS. I played this game, and it’s really fun! It’s defenitly aq must have!
GREAT
Isn’t this just Minis March Again except on DS and not DSiWare…
@superluigi132 YES! A sequel to Luigi’s Mansion, only a bit more difficult/longer play. I want it so badly, I loved that game!
But, any Mario is good Mario.
i just got this for my birthday
i just got this for my birthday

DK is finding love again o.o
Hey i watched one of the gamespots offical trainers and it said that the game system sold seperately. Does it mean the the DS or does it mean some kind of expansion pack for DS
? I HAVE DS and im thinking of downloading this game but i just want to be sure.
well, here we go again.
mario’s got another bitch again?
I want this game
@IDRKAM I did like the Minions/Lemmings style gameplay, but I personally prefer another Mario Vs Donkey kong like the GB/GBA version
UGH! Why can’t they get it right. They fail to realize the 1st one was a hit because you could play as Mario and the toys just followed you. NO ONE, wants to play as the toys. This is why I didn’t get the second one. :/
