Gameplay Puzzle play action in Mystery P.I. Portrait of a Thief consists of a series of timed chapters linked to the mystery of who raided the art collection of your client, Kensington Billingsley. The goal in each chapter is to find a set list of items and answers hidden throughout the urban landscape of the gameplay area and solve any additional puzzles that are presented to you along the way before your allotted 30 minutes runs out. Each list consists of ten items, which are displayed on the DS’ top screen and are ticked off the list as you find them. The actual puzzle-solving happens on the lower touchscreen of the DS/DSi, where players can use either the DS stylus or button combinations to identify hidden items and answers. Along with seek and find puzzles, where players have to find specific objects hidden in a larger jumble of items, the game also features word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, pair matching challenges and more. Players start the game as a rank amateur sleuth, but with success rise in status and gain points. Along with the challenge of seeing how many can be accumulated, points are also valuable in that they can be used to buy hints when/if players get stuck.

Review by S. Hamon for DSi/DS Lite Universal Transporter Carrying Case – Black
Rating:
Got this bag for my kids 2 DSi’s. It will fit both, along with 20 games, but it is not very roomy. If you have a silicone cover on the DSi, it does not slip in & out of the bag very easily as the bag is felt lined and the compartment for the DSi is fairly snug. You deffinitely couldn’t fit a DS in here with the Nerf Armor case on it. While I complain it is not very roomy, it is not meant to tote around 2 DSi’s and the accessories that go along with both of them. If you wanted to use this for just 1 DS & accessories, it would be perfect because everything that goes along with it isn’t very large anyways.
It has an adjustable strap that can fit a child nicely, yet adjust to fit mom & dad too. The strap attaches with a spinning hook, which I find great because it doesn’t get all twisted. You can even remove the strap and use the handle on top of the bag if you wanted to. Lots of room for extra stylus (slides into an elastic strap to hold in place). Overall, a great little bag that doesn’t take up too much room and keeps the DSi’s safe when not being played…I wouldn’t worry about the DS too much if they were inside and the bag was dropped.
******UPDATE******
I actually can fit my sons DSi in the bag when it has the Nerf Armor foam case on it. It is very snug, but it does fit!! I have 2 kids, which means 2 DSi’s…so I’m ordering another Nerf case and I think this bag will hold both of them with the cases on. I’ll update then and also add a picture showing them both in there.
****** 2nd UPDATE ******
Well, we have had this bag for almost 8 months and it is still the perfect bag for my kids 2 DSi’s. I never got around to ordering another Nerf Armor case as I stated above, but I don’t doubt it would fit both of them if needed to. With the DSi’s in it, this bag has been dropped, had drinks spilled on it, been in the middle of tug-o-war matches, and still looks fairly new. I only wish it could hold more games as time goes on and their game collection grows.

Awesome case! Holds everything from multiple DS units, the charger, your stylus whether it’s small or the new fountain pen-like stylus for the DSi XL (there are 4 spots for the small stylus and 2 for the XL stylus), to 20 game cartridges (slots made for the small ones, not the larger GBA ones, though you can definitely tuck some GBA games somewhere in this bag like the zippered compartment which my kids are currently using to hold their chargers).
Be VERY carful when you buy this tranporter because it has undergone a recent transformation. Notice the different pictures of these game bags when you search for them on Amazon. See the hang-tag in the photo of this hot pink one? Well, in the bottom-left, you can barely see it but there are 3 green check marks. One each for DS lite, DSi and DSi XL. Power A is using the same name but there are actually two models. The first one comes with a cardboard sleeve around the bag and the area that holds 2 DS units has a separator that is sewn in. This newer bag with the hang-tag on it comes with a velcro separator so the XL can be accomodated. We almost purchased the other one which would have not fit the XL. Both are on store shelves so unzip it and look inside if you own an XL because you will need the velcro separator model to be able to resize the area accordingly, otherwise it won’t fit right. Whether velcro or sewn separator, DS lite and the regualar DSi will fit fine. But be very aware if this bag is for the XL.
I believe both models come in Pink, Blue and Black but having viewed the ones with the sewn in console area, I noticed it’s a much lighter pink and the one considered black is a combo of both dark gray and black (meaning XL users need to spot hot pink, all black and blue). Crazy I know, but spotting the different colors may help you choose correctly.
It also comes with a removable, adjustable shoulder strap.
Hope this helps because when buying on the web, you may not get all the tiny details and since both models are called Universal Transporters, one can buy the wrong one and who feels like returning and waiting for the right one? I nearly got the wrong bag model twice.
P.S.
I purchased this hot pink model (daughter, 10) and the solid black (son, 7). My kids love the bag’s roominess while not being too large to carry around. My daughter loves the shoulder strap, carries it cross-wise across her body like a purse, and uses the ‘re-sized’ space beside her XL for her cell phone. My boy does not like the shoulder strap and prefers using the short handle on top. The bag is roughly 9″ x 8.5″.
P.P.S.
I just added a customer image of the interior. Hope it helps.

This is my second bag the first was the g-pak i got it somewhere else but the bag was way to small. The universal transporter is the perfect size. Only negitive thing i can say is my ds lite does have the nerf case on it and it wont fit in the little game pocket where it sould go but thats no problem at all i put it right in the front and use the pockets to store other items. The bag is made very well and will hold two games pure pocket not just one game and it has a zipper mess pocket to store yout headphones and cleaning cloth, has a place for your xtra stylus and two places to put the big stylus. I cant say enough good things about this bag. I have the blue one and the pink one is getting ready to ship. If ones not in stock at the time you can go ahead and order and they will ship when its in stock and doesnot take a long time to get. The pink one is very hard to find in stock. If you have a nerf case this will work just fine if you just use the front pocket and it sits right there longways or sideways and still zips up without any trouble! After all when you take the nerf case off you then can store two game systems but if your kids are small you will want to leave the nerf case on for awhile. Great bag and im super happy!!

This is perfect if you have a lot of games. It says you can fit 20 DS games but you can easily fit 2 per pocket, which gives you room for 40 DS games. I am also able to fit 25 Game Boy Advance games comfortably in the zipper pocket. It has two system pockets so if you have both the DS and a DSi you can put them both in. It also can keep both AC adapters and a set of earphones with room for more.
I like this bag because I can keep the DS near by for its Game Boy Advance slot. Plus I can get my GBA games in there.

I thought this was a great bag. It holds everything. The reason I wrote “little” bag is because for my 6 year old it is pretty big, but not too big. It is nice to have all his games, chargers, and even his books with him wherever he takes it. His current DS has the “Lego Star Wars” armor on it and the system still fits in the DS pocket on the inside. I am very happy with this purchase.

Yet another twist on seek and find mystery games. I got it for my birthday and played it 3 straight hours yesterday. At first I thought it was going to be too easy but I found it is not. Like usual you have to find items in messy cluttered rooms. What makes it hard is a few of the items I don’t know what the item is. Hard to find when you don’t know what you are looking for. Just when you get them all found then you have another puzzle to solve and time is ticking away.
Make sure to look for a key and a paintbrush in each picture as they unlock free play games.
I very much like this game. I also suggest Cate West game and Mystery Files. It’s fun to have 3 different ones going at the same time. Keeps the mind sharp.
Five stars for sure.
Review by The Matrix Fan for Mystery P.I. Portrait of a Thief
Rating:
+ Pros:
+ Very addictive gameplay
+ Builds in difficulty
+ Unlockable awards
+ 3 modes of play
- Cons:
- Repetitive levels
- Game can be beaten in 2-3 days
- A carbon copy of Amazing Adventures: The Forgotten Ruins.
In Mystery P.I., you play the part of a detective assigned to finding an art thief. Each level has a picture with several objects littered throughout it. The goal is to find all the items on the list before time runs out. The time limit is very generous, and there is an option to turn off the timer for newer players.
If you’re unable to find an item, a “HINT” option shows the general area to find an object, but using this subtracts points from your final score. Tapping the screen too many times can also subtract points.
At first, the items to find are described clearly:
2 coin stacks
3 lighters
However, as the game progresses, the descriptions become more challenging:
2 Artist’s models
Wrist restraints
In addition to the items on the list, each level has a paint brush and a key hidden in it.
Collecting all the paintbrushes unlocks locations in Unlimited Seek & Solve. This mode allows you to visit each location and find every single hidden item. As you find items on the list, new clues take their place until all the items are found.
Collecting all the keys unlocks the games in Mini-Game Free Play.
The Mini-Games are:
Memory Match
Jigsaw Puzzle
Tile Rotate
Mah-Jongg Match
Word Puzzle
Now if you fancy yourself an expert, there are 10 awards to earn:
(1) Golden Key – awarded for finding all 17 keys.
(2) Golden Paintbrush – awarded for finding all 17 paintbrushes.
(3) Golden Painting – awarded for completing “Find the Art Collection” mode.
(4) Golden Magnifying Glass – awarded for completing “Unlimited Seek & Solve”.
(5) Golden Sculpture – awarded for reaching the rank of Master P.I. at 10 million points.
(6) Golden Frames – awarded when you reach 15,000 points in Memory Match.
(7) Golden Jigsaw Puzzle Piece – awarded when you get 18,000 points in Jigsaw Puzzle.
(8) Golden Rotating Tile – awarded when you get 18,000 points in Tile Rotate.
(9) Golden Mah-Jongg Tile – awarded when you get 18,000 points in Mah-Jongg Match.
(10) Golden Word – awarded when you get 15,000 points in Word Puzzle.
I must admit, this is a very addictive game. The gameplay is very easy to pick up – I didn’t even need to read the directions.
One problem was the repetition. After unlocking the first few levels, I found myself revisiting the same pictures, but with a different list of items to find. This made the game a little boring – not a good sign.
However, my main complaint is that this game is a clone of “Amazing Adventures – The Forgotten Ruins.” Both were produced by Popcap, this game came out about one month later, but the gameplay is almost identical. Many of the same objects are found in this game, the same hints, and the same requirements to unlock awards.
If you check the image I uploaded of the instruction manuals side-by-side, they are almost identical. Only two of the Mini-Games were changed.
If I hadn’t played Amazing Adventures first, I would have given Mystery P.I. 4 stars without hesitation – but I had to take away another star for the lack of originality.

I received “Mystery P.I.” for Christmas and have been enjoying it ever since. I’m in my 70′s and use these games for mental exercise as well as fun. I was delighted with this game because it allowed me to turn off the timer and play in “Relaxed Mode”. It is an “I Spy” clone with a twist and being able to play it at my own speed has made this one of my favorite DS games.

I love this game. Can’t put it down since I bought it. If you like seek and solve games, this is one you must have. You are given a list of objects that need to be found in the picture, and you keep moving on to the next one. There is a goal you are trying to reach, usually solving a mystery of sorts.
Review by Bingo-Karen Haney for Mystery P.I. Portrait of a Thief
Rating:
First of all, I knew I would like this game, as I have become a fan of PopCap made games, especially Amazing Adventures: The Forgotten Ruins. I also like MillionHeir and these are very much like MYSTERY PI: PORTRAIT OF A THIEF. As you become the PI, Private Investigator, it is your job to track an art thief to get back some missing paintings that were stolen. As you collect awards you will meet new characters along the way and unlock some mini-games like in the two above-mentioned games. There are mini games like tile flip and Mahjong tiles that are fun to play when you need a break from the mystery.
If you love “I Spy” type games, then you will love this. The difference is that although you do have many things to find in each picture, MYSTERY PI results in taking you somewhere else so it is a connected story unlike “I Spy”. One trick I’ll let you in on is that there is a key and a paintbrush in each picture puzzle, and if you find them, they will unlock free play games. It does seem easy at first but every once and a while, you come upon something they ask you to find that you may not have any clue as to what it is. It happened to me and maybe it was just my lack vocabulary knowledge but I don’t think so. MYSTERY PI is well worth the money and I highly recommend it for great fun that keeps you thinking but doesn’t stress as far as dexterity and timed battles and shooting skills.
