Review by Megan D’anne Bright for Mahjong Mysteries: Ancient Egypt

I am a huge Mahjong fan, so I knew I would like this game; but it is definitely one of the best Mahjong games I have played on the DS. The others I have played are Mahjong Quest Expeditions and the Mahjong games on Clubhouse Games and 50 Classic Games. This one is definitely the best; there are lots of levels and the tiles are nice and big (I’m only 31, but I appreciate not having teeny tiny tiles to work with). I even like the Egyptian theme (I also really enjoyed Jewel Master: Egypt), even though I usually enjoy the more Asian-themed Mahjong games. I have been waiting for Mahjong: Journey Quest for Tikal to come out, but the release date keeps getting pushed back. I think this one is a great title for any Mahjong fan with a DS.
Other games I would recommend if you like this one are Jewel Master: Egypt, Cradle of Rome, The Quest Trio (or Mah Jong Quest Expeditions if you only want a Mahjong game), and Word Jong. Word Jong is the best combo of Mahjong game and word game, which is my other favorite genre. Other great word games I’ve found are Scrabble, Bookworm and Wordmaster.

If you have already played Mahjong Journey: Quest for Tikal then DON’T get this game. The 2 recently released mahjong games for the DS are virtual clones of one another. The differences are superficial and minor.
In “Adventure” (which is in no way adventurous) there are a few screens of dialog setting up the “adventure” story at the start of the game. Then a couple at the end of the last level in adventure mode when it says you are done. Those screens of dialogue and the design of the tile sets are the only real differences in the 2 games.
In “Classic” mode, there are a variety of tweaked mahjong solitaire games to play. The varieties (and their names) are identical in the 2 games (Mahjongg Mysteries Ancient Egypt and Mahjong Journey Quest for Tikal). You can choose difficulty level (Easy, Normal, Hard).
Overall, I liked the tile set better in Mahjongg Mysteries Ancient Egypt, so I liked the game a bit better than the Quest for Tikal game. But you definitely shouldn’t get both.

If you like to play Mahjong, you will like this game. However there is no story or mystery., just the game. I would rate it just ok.

Wasn’t sure I would be able to see it very well, but I can, it isn’t that small. I enjoy the game and this one is really fun.

I actually bought this for someone else but have played it myself. If you are a fan of this popular tile game of mahjong, then do not miss out on this installation. Many levels and different formations to play.
